Planning a Compact Preschool with a Distinct Identity
Located in Lucknow, this Kidzee preschool is conceived as a compact early-learning environment for 120 students. Set on a 3,300 sq. ft. site, the 2,250 sq. ft. built-up area is distributed across two floors, accommodating classrooms, activity spaces, administrative functions and supporting facilities within a carefully planned footprint. The Kidzee preschool is planned to retain a significant portion of the site for outdoor play and arrival, creating a direct relationship between the learning spaces and the open areas.
The intentional architectural elements bring Kidzee’s brand identity into the space. After designing Kidzee Preschool in Hyderabad, we tried to maintain brand uniformity in the Lucknow Branch while giving the space its own unique character.
Extending Learning into the Outdoor
When entering Kidzee preschool, the school immediately establishes the brand identity through scale, proportion, spatial hierarchy and a distinct colour language. The school becomes a strong visual statement, allowing itself to communicate and market the Kidzee identity.
The outdoor play area is planned as an extension of the Kidzee preschool learning environment, creating a strong connection between indoor spaces and active outdoor learning. The play zone brings together free play, gross motor development, sensory exploration, water play and movement-based activities, allowing children to engage with the space in different ways throughout the day. The planning supports physical coordination, balance, interaction and discovery, making outdoor play an integral part of the overall preschool experience.
Everyday Interactions Integrated into Learning Spaces
Role-play areas are integrated within the larger activity zone to encourage social interaction, collaborative play and peer-to-peer learning. Defined spatial pockets allow children to communicate, negotiate roles and respond to different play situations, while giving educators opportunities to observe behavioural patterns, group dynamics and individual engagement within the space.
The planning is intentionally flexible, allowing activity settings to evolve around different Kidzee preschool themes and learning scenarios. Through open-ended play, children are encouraged to question, explore, make decisions and solve problems, supporting the development of critical thinking, imagination and independent reasoning while maintaining clear circulation and an organised spatial framework.
Child-Centred Classroom Planning
Designed around diversified learning styles, intuitive zoning, and fluid circulation, the Kidzee classrooms balance experiential learning with effortless movement. The spatial planning encourages cognitive development, sensory engagement, motor skills and social interaction, while keeping the classroom open, organised and easy for young children to navigate.
